Travel with medical cannabis: the UK patient's hub

Turkey

Do not travel with your medicine

Do not travel to Turkey with your UK medical cannabis prescription.

Turkey has no framework for foreign patients to bring cannabis-based medicines in. Possession — even of a small, prescribed amount — is prosecuted as a drugs offence, and a UK prescription offers no defence at the border or airside during transit.

Greece

Restricted — confirm with embassy

Greece: medical cannabis exists domestically, but visiting patients need paperwork in advance.

Greece has a domestic medical cannabis framework and is a Schengen state, but a UK prescription is not automatically recognised. Confirm the current visiting-patient route with the Greek embassy before booking, and expect to need a Schengen-style certificate authenticated in the UK.

Portugal

Restricted — confirm with embassy

Portugal: decriminalised at home, but visiting-patient rules are not automatic.

Portugal decriminalised personal drug use in 2001 and has a domestic medical cannabis framework, but neither of those creates an automatic right for a UK patient to bring prescribed cannabis in. Confirm the current process with the Portuguese embassy and INFARMED (the medicines regulator) before you book.

Document checklist for any destination

  • Prescriber's travel letter — your name, diagnosis, medication, dose, and prescriber's details.
  • Copy of your prescription and the dispensing label.
  • Original pharmacy packaging, in hand luggage — never decant.
  • Destination-specific certificate or permit where required (typically applied for 2–6 weeks before travel).
  • Written embassy confirmation where the rules for visiting patients are unclear.
  • Only what the trip needs — 30 days' supply is a typical cap.
